A material number uniquely identifies a Material Master Record, and thus, a material. GFEBS assigns unique material numbers automatically to all Material Master Records. This acts as the identifier for that item.
The material number is used to call up Material Master Records and to track transactions and inventory where the material is used. For reporting purposes, GFEBS maintains the National Stock Number and Management Control Number in the "Old Material Number" field when using the Create Material Master Record (MM01) transaction.
When the Material Master Data Controller creates a Material Master Record, he or she must classify the material according to industry sector and material type.
