ITAR – Distribute Mail

Conditions: You have been designated as the unit mail clerk on DD Form 285 by the commander or unit postal officer. You have been provided with appropriate space for the unit mail facility in accordance with DoD Guidance. You have complete appropriate unit mail clerk training. You have access to AR 600-8-3 (Unit Postal Operations) and DoD 4525.6-M (Department of Defense Postal Manual), Directory File Cards, all applicable mail forms, and individual receptacles. You have been authorized unaccompanied access to the Unit Mailroom. You are required to deliver all postal articles to the appropriate addressee. You are receiving accountable and non-accountable mail on an established schedule. The Unit is deployed in support of forces engaged in full spectrum operations or in garrison operations. Conventional attacks by hostile aircraft and operations by ground elements are possible. Threat capabilities also include information gathering, hostile force sympathizers, and terrorist activities in a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear (CBRN) environment. This task should not be trained in MOPP 4.

Standards: Ensure that all accountable mail is held separate from non-accountable mail, proper notification of and signature of addressee are obtained. Non-accountable mail is distributed to individual mail receptacles or unit mail orderlies as appropriate. Mail that is undeliverable as addressed or misdirected is returned to servicing postal activity within 24 hours. Damaged mail is handled in accordance with established policies and regulatory guidance.
